Art is a process; it is not merely the end result. Art is a conversation between the artist and the surface, and between the observer and the view.

Art thankfully brings us back into our physical senses at a time that is uniquely tech-heavy. Learning the traditional tools and concepts of artmaking is not leisure--it's an integral part of human nature.

Art is individual, personal and expressive, but art is also a whole constellation of techniques, materials, and skills.

I teach techniques, proper brush handling, color mixing, the various rules of art and design. But, it's important to remember that so many of the great artists also broke these rules, after mastering them.

We can have the information, understand the history, learn about what makes a good image, but also be able to question those principals. Play with those principals. This is about knowing something, and the recognition that this process of knowing may involve its unraveling. This flexibility around art is what I love about it.
